Surviving VCE

A recent Year 12 graduate's (not so) encouraging tales.

The Graduates

Brenda Nepomuceno just had her last exam on the 5th of November, 2010. She created this blog out of her wish to help future students to make the most of their VCE experience.

In Year 12 she studied English as a Second Language (ESL), Literature, LOTE: Portuguese, Psychology, Health and Human Development and Further Maths. Her favourite subject was Literature, as she wants to someday become a published author. Brenda was even awarded  a certificate of achievement for both Literature and ESL for receiving the highest coursework grades in these subjects at her Year 12 Graduation. These were major achievements for her as she is actually Brazilian and only arrived in Australia in August 2008.

In VCE she really hated Maths and still, to this date, doesn’t know why she chose it as one of her subjects. Her toughest challenge was to manage her stress, as she’s a perfectionist and wanted a very high ATAR score to get into her first choice of Uni course.

Amanda Aguirre-Villalobos just had her last exam on the 16th of November, 2010.  She is incredibly happy to be a part of this blog and truly hopes to help you all through these crazy years.

She wanted a bit of a head start with her Year 12 subjects and so she did Further Maths in Year 11. She went on to do even more Maths in Year 12 by completing Maths Methods (CAS) and Specialist Maths along with English, LOTE: Italian and Psychology. Her favourite subject? She still can’t decide; with the exceptions of Further Maths and English she actually loved all her classes. She currently wants to continue studying Psychology and see where it takes her.

All through VCE she very much hated the one subject that was compulsory; English. She loves to read and write but her English classes made doing those things sooooooooooo boring. Her toughest subject was Specialist Maths, and the biggest thing she struggled with was keeping up with the workload – there’s always something more interesting than studying to tempt you.

Josh Young just had his last exam on the 10th of November, 2010. He signed up to help with this blog because he believes that people can make use of this website effectively to perform better in VCE. Also, because he reckons that the stupid mistakes he made during Year 12 could have been prevented.

In Year 11, he studied Business Management, attaining a study score of 33, the highest study score achieved by a non-Year 12 student, that wasn’t also a VET subject. In Year 12, he took all the Mathematics subjects offered at a Year 12 level, undertaking Further Maths, Mathematical Methods (CAS), and Specialist Mathematics. He also undertook English, as well as Physics – all while being Vice Captain for his school.

In VCE, he loved Maths. Ask him what 〖16〗^(3/4) is, and he can calculate it in three different ways in less than a minute. Although he was good at Maths, Specialist has been the bane of his existence, probably because he should have studied more at the start of the year. Next year, he’s looking to tear apart RMIT’s Mathematics degree with his ‘mad skillz’ (because sadly, he doesn’t want to take up the lifestyle of a professional wrestler, even though he is 6’5”). In VCE he hated essays. The irony was, he had to write three for the end of year English exam, so during the year he worked towards getting better at them. His toughest challenge was trying to avoid procrastinating, which he only overcame during the start of Unit 4.

Amelia Amuso just had her last exam on the 10th of November, 2010. She is looking forward to having the opportunity to help out current and future VCE students in completing their last years of schooling to the best of their abilities.

Regrettably, Amelia did not complete a Unit 3&4 subject whilst she was in Year 11. However, she studied Legal Studies, Australian History, Psychology, English and Literature during her final year of schooling and did so to a calibre she feels proud of. Her favourite subject would be either English or Literature, and she is hoping to study an Arts course at University so she will then be able to complete her Masters in Teaching and become an English Teacher upon completion.

The subject that gave her the most trouble was Psychology, due to lack of commitment, and the inability to understand the content. However perseverance enabled her to complete her Psychology exam to a degree she can be happy with.
